Isabelina zgodba se odvija leta 1994 na zelo razburkani Kubi. Ona in njena družina upajo, da bodo našli varnost in svobodo v Ameriki, kjer plujejo na splavu.
Mahmud prihaja iz Sirije, kjer sta leta 2015 vladala nasilje in uničevanje. To je razlog, da se njegova družina in on sam preselijo proti Evropi.
