De goudvink, of kortweg vink, dankt zijn naam aan zijn gedrongen lichaam en bijna stierachtige kop. Het mannetje heeft een grijze bovenrug, een korte, dikke snavel die zwart is, net als de vliegveren, kop en gezicht. De borst is felroze/rood en de onderbuik is wit. Vrouwtjes lijken er in grote lijnen op, maar de borst is lichtgrijs. Hun dieet bestaat uit knoppen van fruitbomen, waar ze een grote eetlust voor hebben, zaden en, tijdens de zomermaanden wanneer ze hun jongen voeden, insecten. Ze komen wijdverspreid voor in Europa en gematigd Azië, maar de noordelijkere populaties trekken om de strenge winters te ontwijken.
