De Europese roodborst staat in Groot-Brittannië beter bekend als de roodborst of roodborstje. Het mannetje en het vrouwtje zijn identiek qua verenkleed: een oranje/rode borst en kop met grijze strepen, een bruine bovenzijde en een witte buik. Ze voeden zich voornamelijk met insecten en zijn vaak te vinden op de voederplank in de tuin, waar ze in de winter vooral graag zaadjes en vetbollen eten. Mannetjesroodborsten zijn extreem territoriaal en staan erom bekend dat ze erg agressief zijn tegen andere mannetjes die hun territorium betreden. Ze hebben een groot verspreidingsgebied en komen van nature voor op bijna het hele Europese continent. Scandinavische en Russische roodborsten migreren echter naar Groot-Brittannië en West-Europa om de strenge winters te ontvluchten.

• De roodborst speelt een prominente rol in de Britse folklore en wordt sterk geassocieerd met Kerstmis. In Duitstalig Europa wordt gezegd dat je door de bliksem getroffen wordt als je een roodborstnest verstoort. • De roodborst is meermaals verkozen tot nationale vogel van Groot-Brittannië en heeft een speciale plek, vooral rond Kerstmis, wanneer ze prominent aanwezig zijn in alles wat met Kerstmis te maken heeft.
