It is based on Kyykkä, an ancient throwing game originating from Karelia. However, playing Mölkky does not require the physical strength of playing Kyykkä, and is therefore suitable for everyone, regardless of age or physical condition. It comes down to a combination of luck and throwing. The first player to knock down skittles for 50 points is the winner! The wooden pins are all approximately the same size, and are numbered from 1 to 12. The pins are initially placed upright in a compact formation, 3 to 4 meters away from the throwing area, with the pins organized as follows: 1st row, 1/2; 2nd row, 3/10/4; 3rd row, 5/11/12/6; 4th row, 7/9/8. When one pin is knocked over, the number on this pin counts as the number of points scored. When multiple pins are knocked over, the number of fallen pins counts as the number of points scored. A pin does not count if it leans on the Mölkky or on the other numbered pins (it must lie flat on the ground to count). After each throw, the pins are set upright again in the place where they landed. The first person to score exactly 50 points wins the game. Scoring more than 50 points is penalized by reducing the score to 25. A player is eliminated if he/she fails to knock over any pins for 3 consecutive throws.
