The common dolphin is a magnificent marine mammal belonging to the genus Delphinus. There are two species of common dolphins: the short-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) and the long-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus capensis). Despite its name, the common dolphin isn't the dolphin you often see in marine parks or on the television series "Flipper." That honor belongs to the bottlenose dolphin. However, the common dolphin was a beloved subject in the art and literature of ancient Greece and Rome.
