A fast burning fire starter that burns at high temperatures and ignites damp wood. It is a magnesium block for shavings, plus it has an attached ferrocerium metal strip for striking. Shave a small amount of magnesium from the block with the striker or knife (enough to cover a penny). Gather tinder and make a small pile next to the magnesium shavings. 2. Hold the firestarter with the flint at about a 45° angle and 2.5 cm from the magnesium shavings. 3. Run the firestarter along the entire length of the flint, creating sparks that will ignite the magnesium shavings. 4. The magnesium will burn quickly at 2980°C (5500°F) and will even ignite damp tinder. Add more tinder until a steady fire is established.
