For example, the standard sets requirements for factories regarding the use of harmful chemicals. In addition, factories are obliged to use a sustainable wastewater system and to use water and energy sparingly. GOTS also includes criteria regarding working conditions, which are based on International Labor Organization standards, such as the right to freedom of association and the right to safe and healthy working conditions. The GOTS standard is applied chain-wide in the processing of biological fibers. Certain recognized standards and certificates for organic farming are permitted by GOTS, then certification based on GOTS starts with the first step in processing. GOTS is managed by the International Working Group (IWG), which consists of four organizations, namely: International Association Natural Textile Industry (IVN) in Germany, Soil Association (SA) in England, Organic Trade Association (OTA) in America and the Japan Organic Cotton Association (JOCA). An inspection organization checks whether the requirements are met. For example, Control Union carries out checks and there are other organizations that are allowed to carry out these checks after they have received approval from the IWG.
