The polar bear is the largest predator on Earth. Weighing over 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds) and measuring nearly 3 meters (10 feet) long, this bear is almost twice the size of a Siberian tiger. Polar bears have a thick layer of fat and are able to withstand the extreme Arctic cold. They also have an undercoat of transparent, protective hair. This allows them to swim and hunt in very low temperatures. Polar bears are excellent swimmers and have even been seen 300 kilometers (186 miles) from the coast. When foraging, polar bears have the advantage of a highly sensitive sense of smell. They can detect a scent a mile away or a meter (three feet) beneath the snow! Their hearing and vision are comparable to those of a human. Polar bears are loners, but they don't have fixed territories and enjoy playing with each other.
