DisplayPort 1.2 introduced MST (Multi-Stream Transport), allowing you to connect multiple displays via a single port – ideal for workstations with multiple monitors.
From DisplayPort 1.4 onwards, HDR (High Dynamic Range) support was added, providing more vivid images, deeper colors, and better contrast – especially useful for 4K screens with 10-bit color.
Version 1.4a added Adaptive Sync, a technology that enables variable refresh rates and prevents tearing, which particularly benefits gamers through FreeSync or G-Sync.
DisplayPort 2.0 and 2.1 build on this with higher bandwidth and improved HDR performance at higher resolutions.
Explanation
DSC: Display Stream Compression – compression without visible quality loss, to achieve higher resolutions and refresh rates.
MST: Multi-Stream Transport – multiple displays via a single DisplayPort output.
HDR: High Dynamic Range – better contrast, deeper colors.
Adaptive Sync: Supports variable refresh rates (FreeSync/G-Sync).
Gbps: Gigabit per second – data speed of the connection.
Connector Shapes per Version
Full-size DisplayPort: standard shape, found on most desktop GPUs.
Mini DisplayPort: used on MacBooks, Microsoft Surface, and some laptops (especially before USB-C).
USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode: possible from versions 1.4a and 2.0 – supports video output via USB-C port.
Possible Conversion Options / Adapters
DisplayPort → HDMI: possible via active or passive adapter (depending on version and direction).
DisplayPort → DVI: only Single-Link DVI with passive adapters. Active adapter needed for Dual-Link DVI.
DisplayPort → VGA: only with an active adapter (digital to analog conversion).
Mini DisplayPort → HDMI/DVI/VGA: same as above, different connector shape.
USB-C → DisplayPort: if the device supports DisplayPort Alt Mode.
USB-C → HDMI: via DisplayPort Alt Mode or separate USB-C video chip.
DisplayPort → USB-C: not natively supported; requires special hardware (usually not compatible).
