Plumbing: the basics of water

A proper water connection requires quality parts. Combine with building materials for a complete bathroom or kitchen renovation.

Plumbing tips

Always shut off the main valve before starting plumbing work. Place a bucket under the work area to catch residual water.

Use teflon tape or thread seal on screw threads to prevent leaks. Wrap 3-5 turns in the direction the nut will tighten.

After installation, check all connections for leaks with the water drop test: dry all couplings and check for moisture after 5 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I fix a leaking tap?
Shut off water, disassemble the tap, replace the O-ring or seal. If leaking persists, the tap itself is worn and needs replacement.
Which seal for sanitary?
Use teflon tape for screw threads, sanitary silicone for fixed connections, and O-rings for couplings. Never use silicone on threaded connections.
How do I connect pipes?
For copper, solder or use press fittings. For PEX, use clamp or press fittings. PEX is more flexible and requires fewer couplings.
What is teflon tape?
Teflon tape (PTFE) is a thin band wrapped on screw threads to create a watertight connection. It fills micro-imperfections in the thread.
